Need an ethnicity for a paper?

My name is Scottish, I have a blood-line that is German, Dutch, Jewish, Native-American, and English. I have to write a paper on my ethnicity. What ethnicity do I write about. I say I am American and leave it at that. But I have to have an ethnicity to quell my over-sensitive Ethics Instructor. Can Anyone tell me where I can enter my family names and find out more --- other that Ancestry dot com -- I ain't payin.

isn't being jewish a religion?

I live in St. Louis, and the county library has a genealogy dept which has free computer access to Ancestry.com. Try your local library first. I would favor highlighting the ethnic roots that "survived" the melting-pot... what religion/traditions did you personally grow up with? For example, regardless of your Scottish name, if your family is practicing Judaism then focus on that.

All you have to do is type (Origin of Surname _ _ _ _) into the Browser and unless you name is really rare a ton of information will appear including site that sell Crests and Wikiapedia sites. You can use the information to write you paper (no copying) and get it completed without doing all the Genealogical research that I have hears others are doing for the same type of assignment. I use to give a similar assignment to my High School history classes so that thy would have a better understand of how their families fit into American History. You could also use Familysearch.org in the same manner as Ancestry, it is a free site and has lots of information on how to do research as well as records information. There has been a lot of question asked about this subject so I assume that it is not a flavor of the month assignment. The special thing is that as long as you make it sound reasonable the instructor will never know the difference. Oh and I am sure you know this, but you can be Jewish by ethnicity or by religion.
